Regular Season Play Ends With Two Wins In Columbia! - Busy March Ahead.

The TarWheels traveled to Columbia to play our remaining conference and regular season games of the 2011-2012 season. The team played well and came away with two wins! The TarWheels conference season stats are a perfect 16-0! The TarWheels' in division games from throughout the year aren't too shabby either, 30-2 for the regular season!

In two weekends, The TarWheels will travel to Charleston, SC for the conference tournament. After winning The Carolina's Wheelchair Basketball Conference's conference tournament last year, we'll be attempting to capture the championship again for this season!

The conference tournament will be the preperation for The TarWheels' first trip to the national tournament as an organization! March 22-25 the team will take to the air, flying out to Colorado Springs and taking on the best teams in the nation! Plans are to make our fans, the Carolinas, Concord, and all those supporting our March 9th golf tournament/fundraiser proud!

Bluegrass Invitational - A bit better this year!

After traveling to Charleston and getting a couple road wins, The TarWheels (#1) were pumped up and ready to play in the 34th Bluegrass Invitational Tournament in Lexington, KY. The event plays host to the top teams from across the nation, and for The TarWheels is an opportunity to see talent that we otherwise wouldn't have.

Being seeded 1st, a bye was drawn in the first round for The TarWheels, and our first game was against Seattle (#24). We showed up ready to play and won the first game. Day two of the tournament was a bit tougher, but once our shots started to fall and we began playing better we went on to beat The Wisconsin Thunder (#7). This put us in the bracket for the semi-finals.

Going up against The Turnstone Bandits (#5) was quite an intense game. The score stayed close for the entire game, but The TarWheels couldn't seem to get on the referee's good side. A technical was even called at one point which was later stated to have been a wrong call, and should have instead been a jump ball. This resulted in two points scored by Turnstone. While we did loose by two points, that call wasn't all to blame, had it been a better game with a higher percentage of shots going in, we would have been advancing to the championship game. We did play well as a team though, even after Donnie Langford (The TarWheels' to top scorer) fouled out with 10 minutes to go, we kept a small lead up until the final minute of the game. It was a tough first loss, but will help us to prepare for games and tournaments to come.

After this loss, in the double elimination set-up, The TarWheels went on to play Music City Lighting (#16). The Lightning had previously been sent to the looser's bracket by Turnstone. A win that Sunday morning would have still sent The TarWheels on to the championship game, however, it was not to be. Music City played very well, and height is one thing that you can't coach! The TarWheels lost, with Music City then went on to win the tournament in a championship bout against Turnstone. The TarWheels finished third, with a much better showing than we've had in recent years for this tournament!

The experiences gained from Lexington far outweigh the losses that now show up on our record. The TarWheels will be playing in our conference's tournament in Charleston, SC at the begining of March as well as the national tournament in Colorado Springs, CO at the end of March. Our sights are set on both of these tournaments! Our fundraising efforts are underway to be able to travel to Colorado, and we look forwards to playing as strong together there as we ever have!

Road Trips - Next Two Weekends!

Charleston
The TarWheels head to Charleston, SC for our games against the North Charleston Hurricanes on the 28th! Our very first games of the year were at home against The Hurricanes, but in a previous Charleston tournament attended (and won!) by The TarWheels, our two teams never had to match up. These games are important, and will count towards our conference record and can help to cement our position as the top seed for the conference championships which are fast approaching.

Lexington
A short turn around time, and Thursday we leave out to Lexington, KY! For the 34th year, Lexington is hosting the Bluegrass Invitational! The tournament is held at UK, in the Seaton Center and draws great teams from across the nation! We are looking forwards to this tournament, as it will be filled with extreme competition, and help to prepare us for the National Tournamet. ...A true test for how far the TarWheels have come so far this season, and an opportunity to take and apply our experiences throughout the season's remainder!

TarWheels Golf Tournament at Rocky River

The Carolina TarWheels Golf Classic will be taking place Friday, March 9th, in collaboration with Rocky River Golf Club, as well as The Speakeasy Alehouse of Concord, and several other local businesses! That's right! The D3 rankings are out for the first time this season and sitting on top are The Carolina TarWheels! This is the TarWheels 3rd season in existance since Coach Donnie Langford organized the team. It has been with great dedication, hard work, an awesome team, and great coaching, that we have been able to inch our way up in the rankings in each of those three years.

Now, all we need to do is raise the money to make it to nationals! Nationals are being held in Colorado Springs, Colorado. As you can imagine, flying 10 people, luggage cost with our equipment, car rentals, hotel costs, tournament entry fees, etc. add up fast! PLEASE if you can, take the time to Donate today! We are several thousand dollars away from our goal, but even if it's a small donation, THEY ALL ADD UP! A sleigh full of wins while in Richmond

The TarWheels took to the road once again over the weekend. The results, the same type as the TarWheels are becoming accustom to this season! The Richmond December Invitational Tournament played host to five division three teams. The TarWheels came out on top in each of the four games on Saturday, and so were seeded 1st for the championship game on Sunday. The Flyers played a hard fought game on Sunday, but The TarWheels pulled away in the second half of the game. Special thanks to all of our sponsors, and very special thanks to the Bradley's for inviting us into their home and having us for dinner upon arriving into Richmond, and for coming out to cheer us on! For now, The TarWheels have a bit of a break over Christmas. January, we'll be back at it with trips to Charleston and Augusta for conference games. Also, the site and date for the National Tournament was announced over the weekend. The tournament is to be held in Colorado Springs, CO on March 22-25. Victorious in Spartanburg

Spartanburg played host to the fourth and fifth meeting of The TarWheels and The Pistons this season. The results, TarWheels took their fourth and fifth victories from the Pistons! This brings The TarWheels season stats to 17-1 (with the one loss coming from an upper division team)! Also congratulations to rookie Pete Morgan, who set a career high in the second game scoring 17 points! Thanks to all the friends and family who made the trip as well!

The end of the year is fast approaching, but the TarWheels have a couple more weekends of conference games and tournaments on the schedule before the second half of the season begins.

Saturday, December the 3rd, The TarWheels play The Spartanburg Pistons in Spartanburg, SC! There are two games back to back, the first starting at 1:00pm and the second after a short intermission, approximately 2:30pm. These are conference games, and usually get to be pretty exciting! (So, for all the Asheville fans, this is a great opportunity to drive a short distance and see a game!)

The weekend of the 10th and 11th, the TarWheels travel to Richmond, VA! The Richmond Invitational is being held at Ft. Lee this year (fans don't forget your identification). The competition should be good, and this will also help with getting more games under our belt in preparation for some of the big tournaments we have and might enter into for the end of the season.

Charleston Tournament Update

Tournament Updates: The TarWheels defeated The Fayetteville Flyers Saturday morning in a great battle. We started out a little slow in the first half and were down by 12 points. As the half first half ended we'd come back and were able to bring the scores back close to even. The second half started and so did the TarWheels! We went up by 16, Fayetteville did have a nice run, but we were able to hold them off and pull back away with a final score of 49-45.

The first game was followed by a game against The Spartanburg Pistons. The Pistons drew a bye for their seeding in the tournament. With only an hour and a half between our first and second games, The TarWheels came out ready to play! Although it was a rough and rowdy game, we finished up with a sizable win. Final score, TarWheels 53, Spartanburg 17.

With a little rest we all piled back in the van and rode back to the gym for one last game of the evening. It proved to be quite a physical game. Everyone made it through, but there was a loss of a wheel! Hey, what's eight bucks a spoke?! ...and about 8 broken while giving one foul! Wheelchair basketball is an expensive game, but we love it! The game stayed close for most of the time, there was a break away by us close to the end of the game, and then The Spokesmen came back to within a few. We were able to pull back away with a final score of 49-40 TarWheels!

A great battle for the championship game today! TarWheels are on the way home... UNDEFEATED! Final score: 75-59!

Games scheduled against Columbia Limitless have been canceled for now. We're sorry to bring this news last minute, however we just learned of this ourselves. If a make up game is rescheduled it will be posted to our schedule as soon as possible.

The Charleston Tournament is still on though! The TarWheels will be playing against several great teams in what always proves to be a fun and exciting tournament November 12-13th. Hope to see our Charleston fans again at this tournament!!

A Good Showing At VA Beach Tournament! - Home Games This Weekend, Nov. 5th.

The TarWheels went 3 and 1 in the VA Beach tournament October 29-30. Tournament play proves to help in strengthening the team and gives a chance to immediately apply things just learned from previous games. The team is coming together well this season. Although there was one loss this weekend, it was against an opponent from a higher division. The wins against Richmond, Connecticut, and NRH, bring the 2011-2012 season record to 9-0 in division (9-1 inter-division) play.

If you haven't had an opportunity to see the TarWheels play at HOME, this could be your last chance this season. Please come out and show your support this weekend, November 5th, at The Academy Recreation Center in Concord, NC. The TarWheels will be hosting the last of our at home conference games. We hope to add a home tournament to our schedule, but that event is still pending due to funding and sponsorship. The 2011-2012 basketball season is underway! We are off to a 6-0 start and ready to add to the win column! This coming weekend, October 28-30, the TarWheels will play in our first tournament of the season. The van heads out Friday morning, for our first road trip, in Virginia Beach. Games begin Friday afternoon and will continue throughout the weekend! This tournament is known for bringing teams from the mid-east as well as up and down the east coast. Seeing teams from other regions has a huge impact on how we are ranked nationally putting even more importance on how we perform in this tournament. The higher we are ranked nationally will seed us better in each of the tournaments we enter for the remainder of the year. The TarWheels made it as high as 2nd in the nation last year... we look to better that this year!!!

Please help us afford the expenses involved within our organization. Expenses add up fast, this could be great timing for The TarWheels to be making a first trip to the national tournament. Be a part of sponsoring a possible national championship team!

TarWheels Take Aim at the 2011 Wheelchair Softball Season

After finishing up with an impressive 33 win and 7 loss, conference championship, 2010-11 basketball season, The TarWheels' softball players are ready to see how well they can do during softball season! Last season, The Carolina TarWheels Wheelchair Softball Team was able to show up pretty well at the national competition in NYC... finishing 3rd in our first ever appearance!! Nationals will take place in Nebraska this year and with the proper funding available hopes of improving on that 3rd place finish remain high. While some of the same players play both basketball and softball with in the organization, this is a great opportunity for getting new faces out on the field and involved in wheelchair sports. For anyone who is interested in playing, please contact one of the Langfords as soon as possible, practices have just begun so try and get out soon.

TarWheels Final (Basketball) Tournament - VA Beach!!

The TarWheels are on a high after finishing 1st and undefeated (4-0) in the Carolina Wheelchair Basketball Conference's (CWBC) Conference Tournament on February 26th and 27th. The Tournament was a great success! In the second season as an organization, and first season in the CWBC, the TarWheels put in a bid to host the tournament. This fortuitous decision made earning the championship trophy that much sweeter with a home crowd there to celebrate! Also, earning a personal tournament trophy for Class III All-Tournament was Donnie Langford! Season long personal trophies were also given out at the banquet dinner. All-Tournament trophies were given to Roger White, Donnie Langford, and Richard Travis, as well as Rookie of the Year trophy to David Hix! It is apparent that the TarWheels (29-5 this season) work very well as a team and congratulations are in order to all the TarWheels!

March 11th, the TarWheels travel to Virginia Beach, VA in hopes of adding another championship trophy to the collection! Games are March 12th and 13th. Teams from all over the east coast will be in attendance for this NIT Tournament. Funding to take a team to the national competition in Denver, CO can prove hard to find, as even a 2nd ranked team in the nation like the TarWheels have been made aware. A majority of the wheelchair basketball teams in the US seem to be on the east coast, thus giving the Virginia Beach tournament the feel of a national tournament to many teams attending. CWBC Conference Tournament - Concord, NC

The TarWheels, in association with ABC Home Medical are proud to be hosting The ABC Home Medical's 2011 CWBC Championship Tournament.

Ten Teams from the Carolina Wheelchair Basketball Conference will be looking to compete for the coveted championship of the 2010-2011 season. Teams from all across the Carolinas and even Georgia will be in town for a few days while the tournament takes place. Games are to be held at Concord Middle School on February 26th and 27th. Other events will include a social gathering to start the festivities at Quaker Steak and Lube of Concord on Friday night. Also, a banquet dinner will take place Saturday the 26th at Troutman's Barbecue on Hwy 601 in Concord.

Games are free for fans to attend so mark it down on your calendar today! Players are welcome to stop by ABC Home Medical's booth and enter a drawing (who's prizes that are never short of outstanding)! Plus, you can look forwards to a treat as Janet Langford (team mom) will be on the concession stand. Funds raised from the concession, our t-shirt stand, as well as a raffle will go to support the Carolina TarWheels Organization. Thanks for your support and we look forwards to seeing you there!

Moving on up! TarWheels to 2nd in the Nation!

The new national rankings are out, and the TarWheels have moved up to 2nd! This weekend we'll have a chance to inch forwards that last notch into to top seed of the NWBA. Wish us luck!

The TarWheels are off to Lexington KY this weekend to see how we stack up against some of the best teams in the country. The Bluegrass Tournament has been going for over 30 years and always brings out the top teams.

The TarWheels will next host the Carolina Conference's Conference Tournament. The tournament will be held February 26th and 27th at Concord Middle School. The ten teams that make up the conference are expected to be there. With some great teams in the Carolinas, this will be an exciting battle for the Carolina Conference Championship!

The TarWheels are currently 3rd in the Nation, and are need of your support! A few major tournaments are just around the corner.

We travel to Lexington, KY at the begining of February for an invitiation only event where ten of the higher ranked teams in the nation will be competing! This is followed a couple weeks later at our home tournament, where for the first time, the TarWheels will be hosting the Carolina Conference's conference tournament! Again, ten teams will be competing for this coveted championship! The remaining tournaments in March and April are in Virginia Beach for the NIT, and hopefully we reach our fundraising goals and can take this 3rd place team to nationals in Denver, CO.

As you can imagine, hosting events, facility rentals, travel expenses, etc. are quite taxing on a team that exists because of donations. While asking is a hard thing to do, it is necessary, and even a small amount can add up to make a huge difference.
