TarWheels now 12-0 in Conference Play!

1/27/13

Four games were added to the conference win column this weekend for the TarWheels. The team was in North Charleston, SC playing the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes had traveled to Concord two weeks prior for The Winter Classic put on by the TarWheels. The teams saw each other once in the tournament bracket. This time the TarWheels did the traveling, but continued with the winning!

Two home and two away games are usually scheduled throughout the season between each of the CWBC-South (Carolina's Wheelchair Basketball Conference) teams. The Hurricanes had planned to come to Concord for conference play earlier in the season, but due to some scheduling issues, those games had to be moved. It ended up working out well to just go ahead and play both sets of games while in Charleston. Giving up home court advantage isn't a preferable option, hopefully it would pay off. How would the team perform since they agreed to play their home games away? ...not too bad!

Saturday January 26th
In the first two "away" games on Saturday, points were scored across the board by the team's starters. Final score: 77-35 Tarwheels. Donnie Langford stole the show though with 26 points! He also had 12 assists, 5 steals, and 7 rebounds. The assist column was full as well, one thing the TarWheels are always proud of! This included Roger setting his season high of 4 assists!

The second win for the TarWheels and of the day had a final score of 64-28. Donnie again was top scorer, with 18 of those points. Pete Morgan was right behind him in this game though with 16 points!

Sunday January 27th
The "home" games began Sunday morning. Had the Hurricanes known that Donnie Langford would only play the first half, they might have looked forwards to the start of Sunday a little more. That forsight could also make a team worry! With the ball in Langford's hands, the damage done in a half will only leave a team shaking their head! Seven 3-point shots were hit by Langford who scored a total of 25 points in that game! Jeff Brafford, Pete Morgan, and Roger White all brought in a good portion of the remainder of the points for the game, White scoring 14! The final score for this third game was 59-46.

Sunday's game two continued to discourage the Hurricanes, the tally; 70-39. Most of the TarWheels put up quite a few points on the scoreboard! Langford with 26, Richard Travis had 16, Morgan had 12, and White with 12! Morgan also brought down 10 rebounds from the trees who play on the Hurricane's team! Travis had a nice game at the free-throw line, hitting 5 out of 5 shots!

Down the road
The TarWheels have two more sets of conference games at home this season. With wins in each of those games the team will secure a first place bid into the CWBC Tournament coming up March 8-10th in Myrtle Beach. The TarWheels winning streak in conference play is one to be proud of! They haven't seen a loss since joining the conference for the 2010-2011 season!

On the schedule this year, you'll notice, the team has been planning to play in Lousiville, KY. Plans have changed though and the TarWheels are looking into some other tournament options instead. Information will be updated on the site as it is available. For now, February 16th against the Augusta Bulldogs is next on the list! As always, thanks for you support and keeping up with the TarWheels season.
